The Major Arcana

The 22 Major Arcana cards are the heart of the tarot deck. They represent life's major themes, spiritual lessons, and the great archetypal forces that shape the human experience.

Often called “the trumps” or “the Greater Arcana,” these cards tell a story known as The Fool's Journey — a narrative arc that follows The Fool (card 0) through encounters with archetypal figures and forces, from the raw potential of The Magician to the joyous completion of The World.

When Major Arcana cards appear in a reading, they signal that larger forces are at play. These aren't everyday events — they're the moments that define chapters of your life. Pay special attention when multiple Major Arcana cards appear together.

The Fool's Journey

The Fool's Journey is the narrative thread that connects all 22 Major Arcana cards. It begins with The Fool — representing pure potential, innocence, and the willingness to step into the unknown — and follows their encounters with the great forces of life:

  • Cards 1–7: The Magician through The Chariot — the material world, early lessons, and establishing identity
  • Cards 8–14: Strength through Temperance — the inner world, spiritual growth, and confronting one's shadow
  • Cards 15–21: The Devil through The World — cosmic forces, transformation, and ultimately, wholeness

Every Major Arcana card is a chapter in this journey. When you pull one in a reading, ask yourself: where am I on this path right now?
